LAS VEGAS – The West Coast Conference Tournament is so much more than just basketball. It is a reason for alumni and fans to reunite.

“We’ve been talking about getting together for four years,” said Katie Bruce from Denver. “And this was the perfect occasion for our ‘Girls Trip.’ ”

Bruce was joined by her four “very close” Gonzaga buddies, all 2006 alumnae: Sheila Collins, Seattle; Victoria Genice, Eugene, Ore.; Gretchen Taylor, Baltimore; and Stephanie Janicki, Sedro Woolley, Wash.

It was a great day to work outside.

And they all had reason to celebrate: Zag basketball games, Stephanie’s upcoming wedding, Gretchen’s acceptance to medical school, Stephanie’s and Katie’s graduation from master’s programs; and Sheila starting of graduate school in September.

“We began to arrive Thursday, and by Friday’s Young Alumni get-together at Mandalay Bay ‘we were reunited and it feels so good,’ ” Genice said, humming to the lyrics made popular by Peaches and Herb.

Tracking the Zags caught up with the classmates at a Rebuilding Together/Gonzaga alumni function not far from the Las Vegas Strip. They were part of an alumni service project that included painting the house and yard work for a 74-year-old woman, her daughter and two grandchildren.

“The house looks really good,” said Angelo Barrera, 12, who lives with his grandmother and was obviously tickled to see so many people stepping up to help his family out.

“We’re happy with the turnout,” said Gonzaga’s Assistant Alumni Director Teresa Hudak, who worked with GU Development Officer Wes Oliver and the parent of a Gonzaga alumnus, Duke Phelps, Las Vegas, to put the project together.
