Gonzaga’s Mentor-Makers Kaiser, Thorpe Appear on Spokane Public Schools’ ‘School Talk’

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University’s Katie Kaiser and Sima Thorpe were filmed Nov. 4 for an upcoming episode of “School Talk,” a Spokane Public Schools television production that is airing periodically on Comcast Cable Channel 17 and is available for viewing online now at the following website.

Kaiser is mentoring program coordinator for Gonzaga’s Center for Community Action and Service-Learning, and Thorpe is director of CCASL. They, along with Nancy Stowell, superintendent of Spokane Public Schools, and SPS Community Relations Director Terren Roloff discussed the importance of community involvement in public schools.

Gonzaga’s mentoring programs are operated through CCASL, in partnership with Spokane Public Schools, to address challenges associated with poverty. The mentoring programs have made a profound impact in the community. Campus Kids, Gonzaga’s most well-known mentoring program, is considered a national model.

As Spokane Public Schools continues to address the challenges associated with poverty, Gonzaga University has been at the forefront of providing mentoring to the most at-risk students.
