Well-known travel writer Rick Steves will once again discuss his new book “Travel As a Political Act” at his Dec. 7 campus presentation.
SPOKANE, Wash. – Travel guide, TV show host and author Rick Steves, who spoke at Gonzaga University in fall 2010, will return to campus to discuss “Travel as a Political Act Part II: Going from Causal Tourist to Global Citizen,” at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 7 in the Cataldo Hall Globe Room. Tickets are $15 for the public. For more information or to order tickets, visit the following website.
Steves is a world famous travel guide, host and writer of the popular Public Broadcasting Service TV series “Rick Steves’ Europe,” and is a best-selling author of 40 travel books about Europe. Steves emphasizes the concept of traveling as a “temporary local,” and his books and other productions aim to help American travelers connect authentically with Europe – and Europeans – for a fraction of what most tourists pay.
Steves’ book, “Travel as a Political Act,” underscores the incomparable experience of getting to know a place and its population by going there. In his lecture, Steves will highlight lessons he has learned about tolerance, cultural diversity, fresh perspectives, and what it means to be both an American and a “citizen of the world.”
Studying abroad is a major dynamic for Gonzaga, which has academic programs in several locations, including Italy, where Gonzaga-in-Florence is based. The event also includes an opportunity for fans to get their Steves’ book signed by the author, win a door prize and take part in a raffle with proceeds benefiting the 2012 Cagli, Italy Scholarship. Rick Steves’ book will be on sale at the event courtesy of the Zagshop.
The event is presented by the Gonzaga University Master’s Program in Communication and Leadership in conjunction with KSPS Public Television, Gonzaga’s Center for Global Engagement, and the Northwest Alliance for Responsible Media.
