U.S. News & World Report’s new survey of highly regarded law firms nationwide ranks Gonzaga University School of Law the 58th best law school in the nation, while Gonzaga's MBA program is the 93rd best part-time MBA program in nation.

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga University School of Law is the 58th best law school in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report’s new survey of highly regarded law firms nationwide. In addition, Gonzaga School of Business Administration’s part-time MBA program is ranked 93rd best in the nation. The rankings are in U.S. News’ 2012 edition of the book “Best Graduate Schools.”

The new law school rankings, “When Lawyers Do The Grading,” was developed to indicate where top law firms like to recruit. The report reflects the opinions of recruiters and hiring partners at 750 law firms surveyed, and is based solely on the results of a fall 2010 reputation survey asking respondents to rate the academic quality of each law school on a 5-point scale: outstanding (5); strong (4); good (3); adequate (2); and marginal (1). Anyone unfamiliar with a school was asked to select “don’t know.” To be included, a law school had to be fully accredited by the American Bar Association and have received a minimum number of responses. U.S. News & World Report’s traditional rankings in the book place Gonzaga Law School in the Top Schools category, tied for 121st best in the nation. Gonzaga first appeared on the Top Schools list two years ago.

The MBA rankings note the vital role part-time programs play in business education, especially for working professionals unable to attend school full time. U.S. News’ part-time MBA ranking is based solely on a fall 2010 peer assessment survey that asked business school deans and MBA program directors at each of the nation’s 295 part-time MBA programs to rate the other part-time programs on a 5-point scale, from marginal (1) to outstanding (5).  U.S. News defines part-time MBA programs as being accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business with at least 20 students enrolled part time in both fall 2009 and fall 2010. AACSB accreditation is achieved by only 25 percent of MBA programs nationwide, and only 5 percent of programs internationally. A part-time MBA program had to meet the two-year enrollment and accreditation standard to be included in the ranking.

Gonzaga’s part-time MBA program has ranked in the top 100 programs in the United States for the past two years, and is the only program in Eastern Washington to be ranked.

Each year, U.S. News’ “Best Graduate Schools” book ranks professional-school programs in business, education, engineering, law, and medicine. These rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinions about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research, and students. The data come from surveys of administrators at more than 1,200 programs and some 13,000 academics and professionals, conducted during the fall of 2010 and early 2011. The rankings are designed to be used as a supplement, not a substitute for careful thought and inquiry. The book will be available for sale on April 5.
