SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane-based Avista Corp. and Washington Trust Bank, two of Gonzaga University’s longest-running corporate supporters and cornerstones of the Inland Northwest, will join Gonzaga as premier sponsors of its current yearlong 125th Anniversary Celebration, themed “Tradition and Transformation.”
Gonzaga, founded in 1887, officially launched its 125th Anniversary Celebration during commencement ceremonies May 12-13. The Gonzaga University School of Law will kick-off its Centennial Celebration this fall. Avista and Washington Trust Bank have virtually grown up with Gonzaga and have provided critical support to the University in innumerable ways throughout their shared histories. Avista will celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2014 while Washington Trust Bank – founded in 1902 – is marking its 110th birthday this year.
Gonzaga University President Dr. Thayne McCulloh said Gonzaga’s 125th Anniversary Celebration would not be possible without the support of its sponsors, especially premier – or “Tradition and Transformation” – sponsors Washington Trust Bank and Avista Corp.
“Gonzaga deeply appreciates these outstanding institutions and all of the University’s benefactors during its long, collaborative history in this region,” President McCulloh said. “Our supporters form the foundation of Gonzaga’s tradition and allow us to perform our transformational work as a Jesuit, Catholic university – preparing students to be well-educated women and men for others who will make a lasting impact on our community and world.”
Avista and Washington Trust Bank will support Gonzaga’s many events and activities planned throughout this year, concluding with commencement exercises in May 2013. Among the activities planned to celebrate Gonzaga students, alumni, staff, and supporters are Anniversary Celebration Week (Sept. 12-20), Zagapalooza All-Class Alumni Reunion and Fall Family Weekend (Oct. 19-21) featuring the Oct. 19 Kick-off Celebration at the Spokane Convention Center, and the first National Gonzaga Day (TBA Fall/Winter 2012-13) where friends of Gonzaga all over the world will gather at the same time to celebrate all things Gonzaga and cheer on the men’s basketball team.
The University also wishes to recognize its other 125th Anniversary sponsors to date. Sodexo, the University’s food services provider, is an “1887” sponsor – helping to make the Historic First Day Campus Celebration possible on Sept. 17. The Pacific Northwest Inlander is a media sponsor, providing a full page dedicated to anniversary events and information each month. The Spokesman-Review is also a media sponsor, providing a special, multi-page insert in the Sunday, Sept. 16 edition of the paper.
Gonzaga has unveiled a 125th Anniversary website, where visitors can reflect on the University’s past, look to its future, and stay informed on major events tied to the 125th anniversary and the Law School’s 100th anniversary. The theme of “Tradition and Transformation” is reflected throughout the site.
