Gonzaga Law School Hosts Workshop Oct. 27 on New Immigration Reform Policy

Gonzaga Law School will hosts a workshop Oct. 27 on the new immigration reform policy.

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University School of Law’s Hispanic Law Caucus, in association with the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, will offer a free workshop at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27 to help families and individuals take advantage of a new policy offering undocumented youth an opportunity to defer deportation and apply for work permits. The workshop is free and open to the public and will be held in the Barbieri Courtroom at Gonzaga Law School (721 N. Cincinnati St.).

In June, President Barack Obama signed the new policy into law. Officials estimate up to 40,000 youth in the state of Washington may qualify for deferred deportation under terms of the new policy. First, however, they must apply for acceptance to the program. The workshop will help people determine if they qualify for the program, and will assist them with the application process.

Workshop participants will have a chance to meet with local attorneys at no cost. Participants are encouraged to fill out and bring the following U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services forms:

  • I-821D (Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals);
  • I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization);
  • I-765WS, the worksheet for form I-765.

Participants are also encouraged to gather and bring copies of documentation showing they have been in the United States since June 15, 2007, and are enrolled in – or have completed – high school or a GED (General Educational Development). Also required will be Documentation of any interactions applicants may have had with the criminal justice system.
