‘We are Zags’ Ad Series Highlights Zags Leading Lives with Purpose

Series Depicts Gonzaga Alumni, Students and Faculty Impacting World

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University introduced its new ads depicting alumni, students and faculty making a difference in the world on New Year’s Eve when the Bulldogs – also known as the Zags – beat Xavier University’s Musketeers (72-65) in a nationally televised (ESPN2) men’s basketball game in Cincinnati.

The ads also address what it means to be a “Zag.” The videos highlight alumni including a former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, a brigadier general of the U.S. Army, a national mining safety expert, a Washington State Supreme Court justice and a legal scholar who specializes in public service.

In the series, Gonzaga encourages the public to “join us” – whether as a student, parent, volunteer, donor or supporter – in Gonzaga’s mission of educating students to become people for others. Dave Sonntag, Gonzaga’s assistant vice-president for Marketing and Communications, says the ads explain what makes “Zags” special.

“Zags are people who live their lives with purpose, passion, drive, imagination and innovation – all while serving the common good,” Sonntag says. “Highlighting even a few of them is a privilege. We want the nation to be aware of the incredible impact Zags make every day.”

The tough, determined spirit that distinguishes Gonzaga Bulldogs’ athletic teams is evident in the pursuits of the entire Gonzaga family, Sonntag says, adding that the ads convey Gonzaga’s educational approach that encourages students to embrace challenge, demand justice and find solutions.

The ads also show how Gonzaga alumni are serving society nationwide in their communities and organizations – contributing leadership and hard work to help make a difference in today’s world. In particular, Sonntag says, the ads highlight the way Zags lead – the enthusiasm for excellence and zeal for service which sets them apart.

Three separate ads will air during breaks of Gonzaga basketball games broadcast both nationally and regionally for the rest of the season. The commercials, as well as profiles of the individuals featured in them, can be viewed online at www.gonzaga.edu/joinus.

Additional series ads to debut in 2012 feature Gonzaga students, and alumni physicians, researchers and leaders in the public sector.

Magner-Sanborn, a leading Northwest brand and advertising firm with offices in Spokane and Seattle, produced the series for Gonzaga.
