By Sabrina Jones
SPOKANE, Wash. – After defeating the No. 3 seed Miami Hurricanes 65-54 on their home court at McCarthey Athletic Center on Monday, the No. 11 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs are preparing for a 2,800-mile, cross-country trek to Kingston, R.I. to compete in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament for the third consecutive year.
The Bulldogs (28-5) will take on the No. 2 seed Kentucky Wildcats (27-6) at 4 p.m. PDT (7 p.m. EDT) Sunday (March 25) at the Ryan Center on the University of Rhode Island campus. The winner will advance to the Elite Eight on Tuesday (March 27) to face the winner of the Connecticut vs. Penn State game for a shot at the Final Four in Denver. This will be the first time Gonzaga has met Kentucky in women’s basketball.
The Ryan Center and McCarthey Athletic Center share some attributes, which may help the Bulldogs feel a bit more at home. The Ryan Center was built in 2002 and seats 7,700 fans for basketball while the McCarthey Athletic Center was built in 2004 and seats 6,000 for hoops. Both facilities boast a sea of dark blue seats.
The Wildcats captured their first Southeastern Conference regular-season championship since 1982 with a 13-3 league record while the Bulldogs won the regular-season West Coast Conference title but lost to Brigham Young in the WCC Tournament Championship, finishing 14-2 in WCC play. This is Kentucky’s second trip to the Sweet 16 in three years. Both teams recently advanced to the Elite Eight – Gonzaga the last two seasons and Kentucky in 2010.
Tickets are available online at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling the Gonzaga Ticket Office at (509) 313-6000 or the Ryan Center Ticket Office at (401) 874-7267. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
