"Venus and Adonis," Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Flemish (1577-1640), located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga University Chamber Singers will join Incendo Music Ensemble to present the Valentine’s musical drama, John Blow’s “Venus & Adonis” in three performances: at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 10 and Feb. 11 and at 2 p.m. on Feb. 11. All performances will be in the University Chapel in College Hall – located at the east end of third floor.
In the Valentine tradition, “Venus & Adonis,” originally based on “Metamorphoses” by the Roman poet Ovid, is a true passionate love story filled with dances, huntsmen and even Cupid and his followers. This rendition is fully staged with student soloists and dancers collaborating with professional musicians from the Seattle and Portland areas, who will play on Baroque instruments.
The musical drama will be led by Timothy Westerhaus, Gonzaga’s director of choral and vocal activities. Stage direction is led by Rev. Kevin Connell, S.J., principal of Gonzaga Prep. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors; children under 12 are free.
Seating is limited so purchase tickets in advance by contacting the Gonzaga music department at (509) 313-6733 or visit its website.
