Talented Gonzaga U. Freshmen Debaters Ornelas, Engel Successful at Idaho State U. Competition

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University’s debate team is back on campus after a successful trip to Pocatello, Idaho, where they competed in the Idaho State University Rupp Debates. The talented freshman duo of Mark Ornelas and Joe Engel advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in their career before bowing to a senior team from ISU.

Ornelas and Engel posted a 4-2 record in the preliminaries and advanced to the quarterfinals as the No. 7 seed after beating teams from ISU, Weber State University, University of Wyoming, and Whitman College. Ornelas and Engel were named the No. 13 and No. 15 overall speakers, respectively, from the field of 50 competitors.

Gonzaga debaters head to the University of Kentucky for the Henry Clay Debates this weekend (Oct. 6-8) – the first major national tournament of the season.
