SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga University debate team of Alexis Kostun and Hailey Clawson is back on campus after capturing first place in the Lewis and Clark College Debate Tournament in Portland, Ore.

Kostun, a junior from Austin, Texas, and Clawson, a sophomore from Denver, advanced undefeated through six preliminary rounds to the elimination debate as the top seed before defeating a team from Whitman College on a unanimous (3-0) decision in the final round. Also, Kostun was honored as the top overall individual speaker at the tournament held Oct.12-13.

“We always enjoy a tournament victory, but this one was even sweeter as it came against regional rival Whitman College,” said Coach Glen Frappier, director of forensics and senior lecturer in Gonzaga’s communication studies department.

Also earning honors at the tournament was the Gonzaga freshman team of Jenna Bauer, West Des Moines, Iowa, and Dillon Johnson, Coeur d’Alene, who captured third place by advancing to the semifinals.

“Overall, it was an amazing weekend for the entire team,” Frappier said. “Next weekend the we will send teams to the University of Nevada at Las Vegas and then Harvard University the following weekend to close out a very busy October,” Frappier said.
