SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga University varsity debate program begins Christmas break ranked No. 7 in the nation in the National Debate Tournament Varsity Rankings. Coach Glen Frappier, director of forensics and senior lecturer in Gonzaga’s communication studies department, said he is pleased with the team’s success.

“This is especially impressive given our team is predominantly freshman. The future is bright,” Frappier said.

When spring semester begins in January, Gonzaga’s debaters will compete in tournaments at California State University, Fullerton, the U.S. Naval Academy, University of Texas and Weber State University. The Zags aim to qualify again for the National Debate Tournament as a Gonzaga team has for the past 17 consecutive years.

In 2012, Gonzaga’s top debate team of seniors Leah Moczulski and Paul Kanellopoulos advanced to the NDT Final Four before losing 3-2 to Northwestern University.

“We will kick it all off on January 3 when we host our high school tournament, the Conway Classic Speech and Debate Tournament,” Frappier said.
