SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University President Thayne McCulloh will reveal the University’s official new tartan – a plaid design to be used in various Gonzaga products – at noon Friday, April 11 on the Herak Quad. Gonzaga marketing students developed the tartan as a senior project and sparked interest by hosting a vote this spring on three design options.
The free event – called “Tartan Legacy Day” – runs from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., is open to the public and includes appearances by the Shadle Park Bagpipe Band and Highland Dance Team. The project allowed students, alumni, family, and friends of Gonzaga to help choose the University’s newest trademark. The event also will include games, prizes, food, and photo opportunities with Gonzaga’s mascot Spike. For those who cannot attend, the GU Tartan Facebook page also will reveal the chosen tartan.
Class member Samantha Chin said the games and activities are themed around the elements of the tartan design.
“We hope to educate the Gonzaga community on the history and legacy of the University in an interactive way,” Chin said.
The Gonzaga University Alumni Association will be on hand with the first official tartan merchandise for sale. A portion of all purchases will go toward a scholarship program to support future students in the School of Business Administration.
