Bloomsday Founder Don Kardong, Gonzaga Runners Offer Tips for Sunday’s Race (May 6)

For Gonzaga University students, this coming Sunday, May 6 marks more than the last day to study for finals week. It also represents the 36th annual Lilac Bloomsday Run, a 12-kilometer (7.46 miles) event launched here in 1977 by former Olympics Marathon runner Don Kardong.

Ice hockey is a rough sport, but a group of local special-needs children look forward to the ice, speed, and even the inevitable tumbles every Friday night when Gonzaga Special Hockey provides a joyous break from their everyday struggles. The program also offers student-mentors from the University’s hockey team with a unique volunteer opportunity to live Gonzaga’s mission by serving others, particularly the underserved.

Gonzaga University’s top debate team of seniors Leah Moczulski and Paul Kanellopoulos advanced to the Final Four of the National Debate Tournament April 2 before losing 3-2 to Northwestern University. Moczulski and Kanellopoulos, both from Houston, became the first team in school history to advance to the Final Four.

Gonzaga University’s women’s basketball season came to an abrupt end in the Sweet Sixteen against No. 2 seed University of Kentucky Wildcats. The Bulldogs lost 79-62 and were led by senior Kayla Standish with 25 points. Standish, along with fellow seniors Katelan Redmon, Kelly Bowen and Shannon Reader, combined for 49 of the team’s 62 points. The Bulldogs close out their careers with 115 wins and 12 tournament games, a first for any Gonzaga senior class.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs successfully made their cross-country trip, landing in Rhode Island Friday evening, and spent Saturday preparing for Sunday’s Sweet Sixteen game against the No. 2 University of Kentucky Wildcats. The Bulldogs looked loose and comfortable on the floor at Ryan Center, on the University of Rhode Island campus, during their open practice Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is Sunday at 7 p.m. EDT.

After defeating No. 3 seed Miami Hurricanes 65-54 on their home court at McCarthey Athletic Center on Monday, the No. 11 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs are preparing for a 2,800-mile, cross-country trek to Kingston, R.I. to compete in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament for the third consecutive year.
