Olynyk Scores 21, Pangos and Bell Make Key Shots to Lift Zags to 64-58 Win over Southern in NCAA Tourney
SALT LAKE CITY – Junior forward Kelly Olynyk scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and sophomore guards Kevin Pangos and Gary Bell drained some clutch second-half shots to lift No. 1-ranked Gonzaga University to a 64-58 win over scrappy Southern University on Thursday in a second-round game of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. The Bulldogs (32-2), top seed in the West Region, take on No. 9 seed Wichita State on Saturday at 6:40 p.m. (MDT; 5:40 p.m. PDT). The Shockers (27-8) beat No. 8 seed Pittsburgh 73-55 in Thursday’s first game at the EnergySolutions Arena.

Women Zags Defeat BYU 62-43 to Clinch Spot in Monday’s WCC Championship
LAS VEGAS — No. 1 seeded Gonzaga University women’s basketball team earned a 62-43 victory over No. 4 seed BYU in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference Championship Saturday afternoon at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. The Bulldogs will now play in their seventh-straight championship game, against either No. 2 seed University of San Diego or No. 3 seed Saint Mary’s College, Monday at 1 p.m.
Houston Stockton: Football Star & Reporter on the Field
Before John Stockton or his son David Stockton, there was Houston John Stockton. The grandfather of Gonzaga University and NBA basketball star John Stockton, and great-grandfather of current Gonzaga basketball player David Stockton (John’s son), Houston played football for Gonzaga during the sport’s “Golden Age.” As a triple-threat halfback, Stockton was proficient in running, passing, and punting. His defensive skills as a linebacker were as distinct as his offensive prowess. Houston was the father of Jack Stockton, a founder of Jack and Dan’s tavern near Gonzaga’s campus.

Gonzaga’s Study Abroad Program in Turkey Extends University’s Mission, Expands Students’ Human Family
It’s summer on the Gonzaga University campus and I have a meeting with Dan Garrity, assistant professor of broadcast studies. The sun beams down on campus, rendered ghost-town-like this time of the year except for the many camps for young cheerleaders and athletes. As I wind toward the Broadcast and Journalism Center, students are gone, continuing their education with summer internships, exploring mountains and rivers, spending time at home or expanding their human family and global engagement through Gonzaga’s many summer study abroad programs. In recognition of Gonzaga’s quasquicentennial celebration (125th anniversary), which was launched at this year’s commencement ceremonies May 12-13, @Gonzaga continues its monthly series counting back to its founding year, 1887. This series began in September 2010 when we looked back six years to the 2004-05 academic year. Each subsequent monthly story looked back another six years.
